Fredericton
Watch history flow through this riverfront capital
New Brunswick’s provincial capital unfolds gently along the banks of the St. John River. Come for the warm Maritime hospitality and experience the city’s strong British colonial heritage by visiting some award-winning historic attractions. See history in the making
Walk in the footsteps of red-coated soldiers as you relive the area’s British colonial military past at the Historic Garrison District.
Set behind a wrought-iron-and-stone fence, this National Historic Site is a top New Brunswick attraction. In addition to the twice daily changing of the guard, you’ll find museums, art galleries, craft shops, tours, music performances, storytellers and live theatre.
See how a young colony transformed into a vibrant nation at the award-winning Kings Landing Historical Settlement. Step back into the 19th century as more than 170 characters in period costume bring the era to life. Listen for wagons pulled by trotting work horses, tour some 70 buildings, watch theatre performances and enjoy delicious heritage dining.
Don’t miss a visit to the sprawling Old Government House, built between 1826 and 1828 as the residence for New Brunswick’s governors and lieutenant-governors.
Ghost tours and other attractions
Head downtown to the Lighthouse Adventure Centre on the St. John River to shop and pick up information on the city’s attractions, which range from riverboat cruises to cultural tours. You can even join a lantern-lit ghost tour through downtown to meet the historic figures of Fredericton’s past.
The Beaverbrook Art Gallery is internationally known for its outstanding collection of British paintings from the Elizabethan era to the modern period.
For busy hands and brains, take the kids to the Science East Science Centre to explore exotic insects and get the chance to create mini-tornados.
If the kids still have energy to burn, head for Kingswood Park—a massive, family-oriented entertainment centre with candlepin bowling, laser tag, indoor playgrounds and some 40 games of skill.
For fresh produce, meats and unique artist wares, visit the W.W. Boyce Farmers’ Market, a Fredericton tradition since 1951.
Fredericton festivals
Catch the sweet sounds and ceremony of summer at the New Brunswick Highland Games and Scottish Festival in July. The Harvest Jazz and Blues Festival will keep you in a delightful musical groove in September. Enjoy your fill of classical chamber music at the New Brunswick Summer Music Festival.
